How safe is the Makati area in the Philippines?

I'm ethnic Filipino borned and raised in the UK, I got a German girlfriend and I'm planning on taking her to Manila for a visit. We looked it up and decided to stay at the Manila Peninsula.

Now, I know how dangerous it is for everybody in the Philippines. I don't mind snatchings and being robbed, I'm worried about kidnappings and corrupt cops.

I'm not really concerned for myself as I can blend in the crowd easily with my dark skin (unless I start trying to speak Filipino). I'm concerned about my girlfriend, who happens to be caucasian, 25 years old, fiery blonde hair and a hot piece of ***. In other words, she would stick out like a sore thumb when mixed with Filipinos.

My question is... how safe is it really in Makati? Does the area have better security since thay have all those classy hotels and malls there? Is it even safe walking on the sidewalk around 9-10pm?

Just Makati, we're not planning on visiting Malate, Binondo, Buendia or any of those tourist unfirendly spots.

Makati is safer compared to the cities you've listed on your last sentence. Much much safer I have to mention. Just a few tips:

1) Definitely your gilfriend will get some attentions from the people. Please ask her to dress modestly. Sleeveless is fine since it's always warm in my home country but not too much cleavage and not too short or too skimpy bottoms.

I'm 28 year old filipina woman currently in California ... so I know! because I grew up %26amp; studied in the Phil.

2) Jewelry - please, as much as possible just keep it low key.

3) Kidnappings %26amp; Corrupt? Well, sorry but usually the Chinese people are the ones being kidnapped. And as for the cops, just keep on talking to them in straight English %26amp; be firm...

4) Walking between 9 - 10 on sidewalks? As long as there's still people walking around too. But I don't suggest walking around the sidewalks between 11 %26amp; up unless there's really alot of people too.

Have a Safe %26amp; Pleasant Trip!

Lord, I went last summer, I didn't even have to talk and they knew I was American.

Yea, I say, dress conservatively. she'll be getting enough attention cus she's white%26amp;naturally good-looking.

mi madre [i`m 15 %26amp; went wit my familia] carried the money like using a clothingspin and hooked her money onto the inside of her shirt or something. when she was a teenager, she'd put her money in her shoe especially while on jeepney rides. people could easily slip out your wallet from your pocket, or take your gf's bag.

don't bring expensive things, and if you do, don't leave them (like a camcorder bag) alone. i went to Church %26amp; left my mom's bag wit tons of cash on a pew during communion %26amp; she went bisserk [sp?] ahah. but it was still there afterwards. go figure. it was church. i thought it was okay.

stay in crowded areas, but also at the same time keep her at your side at all times. stay in crowded areas, cus you do have chances of getting jumped by a group.

Makati is fairly safe. Actually, much safer than the other cities, but here are some tips:

1. In terms of clothing, wear normal clothes

2. Although Makati is safe, still you always have to be alert.

Makati is really safe., but ur girlfriend needs to stay close to you and ALWAYS KEEP AN EYE ON HER! She might get a little bit of attention but people in Makati does'nt really care because Makati is just like New York, everybody is busy because there is so many business sites over there and most of the people are business men and women., DOn't worry about Makati worry about MANILA!!!!!!!!

Have a great Summer!

How safe is the Makati area in the Philippines?

makati is much safer than New york!!! and no need to worry about walking late night in the area coz, makati is one of the call center district in the philippines. Most young professionals are also walking around the area that time...

just take necessary precaustion:

do not count your money on street. and don't bring to much money.

Makati is probably as safe or safer than London. The Peninsula is central and is a good base. If you stick to the main streets then you will have no problems. Just be sensible - no excess wealth on display, eg. use a camera phone instead of a big camera, keep your money in several pockets, keep small change available so you dont need to bring out wads of high denomination notes. use a cheap watch instead of Rolex. just be sensible.

I have never seen ANY trouble in Makati, or anywhere else in PI. Just keep her covered up modestly - its a Catholic country (as you obviously know) and she is more likely to offend through overdisplaying flesh than be mugged!

I am a white American,, and have walked all over Makati, ,Malati, Manila, the embasies, and back,, ( no taxies) My only problem was with a cop, was at crossing,,wanting a payout,,( he got an *** kicking instead) I have never been bothered in Makati,, of course,, I am a large, muscular guy,,not to be trifled with. as for the lady,, I think I would recomend a armned guard,,,really!!

Malati,, is a tourist spot filled with drunk foreingners,, not a place to take her,, at least on the street. If you do go there,,go by taxi,, and go to the Portico restaraunt,, great food.

love it there,, but,, when you come out,, a pimp will try to sel you a woman,,right in front of your woman!! I always watch for pick pockets, period,,evrywhere I go. Also,, some taxi drivers will try to rob you, if late at night!! I had one try to get me into the marshes,, I had to jump out of a moving cab,,becuase he refused to stop!! Was going to rob me for sure,,refused to take me to Makati, where I was staying,, he thought I was just some dumb American, and did not know where I was,, or where he was trying to take me!! If you are looking for a reasonable place to stay,, for sure, go to West Makati Inn,, they are very nice people there. it was a pleasure to stay there,, and I will surely go back there, myself.
