Lice or dandruff?

my lil sister has something that is all over her and and is scratching and she uses my combs and brushes...lately since ive been lookin i have these lil white things in my hair but i can pull them off...their like wrapped around the pieces....but i dont itch....is it lice or dandruff????

Lice or dandruff?

Lice are small insects, and adapt to blend in with your hair color. Their eggs, called nits, are also meant to blend in with your hair color. Only empty egg cases are white, but they do not come off easily. When lice lay their eggs, they use a special glue-like substance, so the eggs won't fall off. They can be slid up and down the hair shaft, but won't just fall off. So, if it's white and comes off easily, then it is dandruff. If not, it's lice.

The easiest way to tell would be to have someone examine your head, or look at your sister's head very closely, and comb through small sections using a fine-toothed comb. Separate the hair near the scalp, so that you can see the scalp. Baby lice can look like small scabs on the scalp, while the older ones look more like actual bugs. You will see them moving if they are there. The eggs will look like bumps on the hair shaft near the scalp. This article has some good info as well as a link to pictures;

If it is lice, I recommend a home treatment. My daughter got lice from a kid at daycare, and after using the NIX program TWICE, we finally tried a pesticide-free treatment called "Lice Free." It was a bit more expensive, but is safer to use, and seemed to work much better than the other stuff. Be sure to change your bedsheets after each treatment. If you have any stuffed animals that you keep on your bed, put them in garbage bags, and make sure they are sealed tight- keep them in there for 10 days to make sure all lice have died and all the eggs have hatched. It also helps to get rid of whatever brushes or combs you have and get new ones. If you have animals, don't worry- human lice don't like animals, so they won't be affected by them.

If it's not lice, I recommend buying a dandruff shampoo, like head and shoulders or selsun blue. Use that, then follow with a deep conditioner the first time. I like Aussie's 3-minute miracle Deeeep formula- you can buy single treatments or a big bottle. Head and Shoulders makes dandruff control conditioners, so you might want to try that as well. If that doesn't take care of it, see a doctor/dermatologist- it might be a type of dermatitis that needs a stronger treatment.

I hope it's not lice, for your sake!! Good luck! :)

Lice or dandruff?

well if it moves it's lice.

Lice or dandruff?

dandruff that has grown legs

Lice or dandruff?

Lice blend into the color of her hair...so if you see anything moving its lice. But it could be nits [eggs of the lice]. If you can easily pull them off its dandruff, if you can`t its not because the eggs are sort of glued to the hair shaft.

Lice or dandruff?

If it's flaky and falls off when you brush it, it's dandruff. If it moves, it's lice.

Lice or dandruff?

lice look like tiny bugs. you probably have nits (lice eggs) which wrap around the hair shaft (the way you are describing it) and usually near the scalp rather than at the end of the hair. its a bad sign and both you and your sister should get treatment for it. follow directions to a tee!

wash all of your clothes and bedsheets in hot water. throw away your hair brushes and get new ones.

Lice or dandruff?

either way, use tea tree oil on your head. If it's lice, tea tree oil will kill them...if it's dandruff, tea tree oil will moisturize you scalp!

Lice or dandruff?

what everyone else said is good. but if you think you have lice, make sure to throw out brushes/wash your sheets like they said. AND, go to the doctor and they'll give you some lice shampoo which will kill the lice out!

Lice or dandruff?

Get the finest comb you can find, you can get special lice combs from pharmacies they are best but a normal fine comb may do.

Comb your hair really thoroughly over a large piece of white paper, you'll soon be able to see if you have creepy crawlies falling off or if it's just flakey pieces.

If it is lice get the whole family treated as soon as possible.

Fingers crossed it's not but they are very common.

Lice or dandruff?

sounds like you have nits (lice eggs) which will hatch and they will just keep multiplying. my daughter has really thick hair and i could never get it all out. because the nits are around the hair. so i got the shampoo and all that stuff and it never fully worked. so i bought the hair coloring the same color as her hair and put it on. it killed out everything and we haven't had any problems since.

Lice or dandruff?

Hi there, first of all, you really shouldn't share your brushes or combs with anyone because you can very easily get a number of scalp problems from others. Dandruff will cause itching and so will dry scalp which is probably what it is since it is white and so visible. Lice appear as little tiny black spots, almost like small scabs which when more mature you can see move if you watch carefully. What I would definately do right away is to clean your brushes and combs throughly with hot soapy water and then soak in a good disenfectant for atleast 20 minutes and then rinse throughly. As for your hair, try deep conditioning it and your scalp. Wash your hair thoroughly with a good shampoo, then take a good conditioner or hot oil and rub in into your scalp and hair. Wet a towel in hot water, ring out the water, and then wrap your head in it. Leave it on atleast 20 minutes. Do this the first week atleast twice and then once a week after (you should do this anyway for hair and scalp maintenance). Your sister should do the same..Good luck!!
