My cat has clumped hair all over her hind end, what is it and what should I do?

I cut a piece of it out and it's thick and almost similar to how her tail feels. I've tried brushing it out but it's not working, I'm not sure what to do.

The best bet is a professional groomer, but good luck with that!! My husband dealt with this on the farm cats he had all the time. If you can get the cat to sit still, or have some one hold her calmly, u need to knead the fur out with your fingers, that way you can feel your way aroudn the snarl/clump. It takes a few minutes to get it out once you get the hang of it, but it doesnt hurt them this way. A way to avoid these is once they are all out, brush her hind end once to twice a day, so that the fur is less likely to gather there. Also you could have it "trimmed" professionally once a month or how ever long it takes to grow back. Good Luck

I have th same problem with my cat , she is a long haired russian blue persian and she is very old , shes 18 . she has a hard time taking care of herself and it hurts her when I brush her so I can do it very little. She get mats on her hinds some have gotten pretty big but I juz do the best I can to cut the and keep brushing (as much as she can take) till I get rid of them!

get a "rake" its a type of cat brush meant for brushing out matted fur. If its really bad, take the cat to the vet and have one of the vet techs shave/ rake out the fur to get it all smoothed out, then you can just take care of it from there.

You will just have to cut all the clumped hair off and be careful not to cut the skin when doing so. Also, keep her brushed out at least once a week from now on to keep this from happening again.
