Why do I pick my scalp?

I think I have a problem. Once in a while, when I am in class I find myself using my hand to scan my head, through my hair, for little pieces of dry skin and oil. They are really really small, but i can feel them and I just have to take them out. I also have a couple of scarlike patches on my scalp that are like peasized but are dry and I pick the patches of dry skin off. I cant help myself. I have long hair, so my fingers are running through it and kinda messing it up. I dont know why I do it, I dont even realize it, Once I do realize it I try my best to stop. So it isnt an all day thing. I think it has been going on for about a few month. Does anyone else have this problem? What could it be? I dont have OCD or anyother sort of problem like this, and I have never had an addiction with drugs, cigarrettes, nor alcohol

that is really weird.....but i would have to say I'm guilty too. like you i run my hands through my hair and pick, especially when I'm bored. i don't think anything is wrong, but it wouldn't hurt to try and stop. sometimes I'll put my hair or put barrettes, something to make me think twice before messing up my hair. Ezcema or lice. Lice do not mean dirt - just contracted - they produce this symptom all the time. Try mixing Tree Oil in you shampoo or using RC lice treatment - REALLY!

I just got over that... I went to a doctor and it was an infection so she put me on a prescription and now there all gone. Just be careful because when you pick it it bleeds and that's why you have scars. Mine got bigger and bigger so see a Doctor right away! My school nurse thought it was lice so i did the treatment and it made it worse so again see a doctor right away. Until then I also used head and shoulders shampoo!

Not that I really know anything about this but I think it may be a mild form of OCD. It is often compared with Trichotillomania which is an impulse control disorder in which the sufferers are compulsively driven to pull out hair from their bodies. Some pull from their heads, some from their eyelashes and eyebrows... anyway trichotillomania is usually defined as a mild form of OCD, and the symptoms of skin pickers are very similar. Sufferers usually don't realise they are doing it and it often becomes worse when they are stressed or have nothing to do with their hands. I suggest finding something to keep your hands occupied and try to get someone else to keep an eye on you and let you know when you're doing it so you can stop yourself. Good luck : )

I am guessing that you are a girl, and we piddle with our hair the ones that want you to try different remedies,don't! This needs to be treated by a Dr., the scalp is a great indicator of many things that could be wrong. But, most of all don"t be afraid to get help. Dr's. see people with this everyday. You stated your question so well, it was exactly what a Dr. would want you to tell him. You would be a pleasure in the exam room.

Yes, this is a very strange OCD. Theres scalp picking and hair pulling and eyebrow picking that can relate to you. I have never had this problem, but I've known people who have. It is nothing usually the "victim" can prevent or dignose, but it's just something that it brought on. No, you don't have lice, (thank you dumb people for scaring her...) but it's just an Obcessive Compulsive Disorder. You're not mental, nor have diseases. You should see your regular doctor and tell him about your problems. He can perscribe medicine to help "relieve" the urge to do so. I hope this helps!!! :)))

Oh my goodness, I do this too! I thought I was alone in my looniness. And no, I don't have lice either. It could be related to OCD because I think I have that...
