Today a customer came into my shoppe to look for a hair piece and explained that for the last few years she's been taking care of her mother who has recently passed away. Now she's ready to take care of herself so was looking for a new style. I was trying some wigs on her and she began to well up with tears. She didn't say why she was crying but said she has had a hard last couple of days. I'm not a very nosey person so I didn't ask her why she had tears in her eyes. I just tried to make her laugh and direct her mind away from whatever was making her so sad. She did cheer up and left the store in a better mood. When she left I wondered if I should've gotten more personal with her, if it would be a better thing to do the next time I come across someone who obviously feels sad. Is it good to be nosey with a complete stranger and ask them why they are crying. Or is it better to do what I did and just try to make them feel better without asking what's wrong.

She was sad over the loss of her mother, but also probably feeling a litle guilty because now she is paying attention to herself after being such a giving caretaker of her mother. You did the right thing, she has to get past her mother's death and start living again. Reliving misery serves no purpose, it just opens the wound up again.
