This past month I've noticed my 21mth old daughter develop two significant fears - one to insects/spiders and the other to strands of fallen hair. The insects fear I can relate to (and no, it was not my reaction to a cockroach that did it as my husband says, she developed this all on her own!) but the hair fear I find really strange. If she sees a strand of hair on the floor she starts shrieking, or heaven forbid she finds a piece of her hair on her hand or in her bath water.... she absolutely flips out! Just curious if any other toddlers have developed 'strange' fears or if there is something I should do to help her overcome them. I'm sure they will pass, but until they do....

When my little sister was a toddler she used to be deathly afraid of helicopters when the flew over the house. As soon as she saw one she would freak out and run for cover in the house. I have no idea why this happened, but eventually she got over it as she got older. I don't even think she remembers it now being 9 years of age.

My daughter was afraid of the dark, but we overcame that. But she has a fear of walking on wooden decks, that have the cracks between each piece of wood, and any structure that is like that, like a small bridge or playground equipment. Also does not like the play things with the tubes, she will go up in them and cry the whole time until she comes down the slide and then there is a big smile on her face!

Things that appear small and insignificant to us- can seam large and HUGE to a toddler.
Think about it- you are twice- sometime 3x the size of a 21 mth old. Plus you have added understanding, familiarity to your surroundings that your daughter does not. Its a scary world for an adult- let alone a child!
Could be she doesn't quite understand why people lose hair? Where does it come from? So its just plain scary to her!
Most toddler get over their irrational fears pretty quickly and painlessly. I wouldn't worry- unless it grows to a constant anxiety.
Make sure you write it down in a book- so you'll always have something to tell her when she gets older- "Honey, You were afraid of hair!" and you'll both have a good laugh!

Has your toddler developed a fear of certain things?
Yes, it's completely normal to have strange fears at the age. I would either ignore it, or maybe try showing her that the pieces of hair come from a person's head. When my boys were this age, I would make a little book out of construction paper and tie it together with yarn. In the book I would explain the fear in easy to understand ways, and paste pictures from a magazine. In this case it would be something like, "Everyone has hair" "Mommy has hair" "Your hair has many strands" "Can you brush your hair?" Or something like that. My boys would love reading the books that addressed their fears over and over again until the fear finally didn't seem so big anymore. Either way, it will go away with time. Good luck!

This kind of reminds me of my psychology class... i mean the hair could be reminding her of insects, their legs that are almost as thing as hair strands... especially spiders. she has found something in common with these things. she might not be realizing that the hair is a single stand of hair, she might see the hair on our head as a whole instead of as single stands together. and it may not be that a single stand of hair bothers her, it might just be that the single strand of hair reminds her of something else (like the insect)
Has your toddler developed a fear of certain things?
This is perfectly normal, and will pass in time. My son is 18 months old, and he is deathly afraid of the vacuum cleaner. You can't even bring it into the room without him shrieking and hiding under the couch.
About once a week, he will turn the corner running as fast as his legs can catch him about out of breath over something harmless.
Has your toddler developed a fear of certain things?
It is normal. A child starts to become more aware of their world They will become afraid of things. Just let them do what htye need to do. It passes when the time is right. I am sure you can find something you are very afraid of. So, don't worry about it, as hard as it is to see your child afraid...it is a good thing they are becoming more aware of the things around them.
One of my daughters fears started this weekend. On Saturday she was fine with bugs and flys. But, on Sunday, she FREAKED out when she saw a fly in our living room. Now, she sees one she covers her mouth and looks for me screaming. If she has to go past the fly to get to me, she won't. She will sit there screaming and passing.
She also hates riding my my husbands shoulders. She used to love it, and would do it all the time. But, within the last few months, she won't have anything to do with being that high in the air.
